Modern living has been revolutionized by the cell phone. Everyone can own a cell phone. They are cheap. Now, more people than ever have their own phone number. More people have cell phones than TVs or cars. In the US and Canada 75% of people own cell phones. In Europe it is 140%. It is thought that half of the world’s population will own a cell phone by the end of 2008.

Africa is considered the quickest growing cell phone market in the world. In some African locations cell phone ownership is reaching 100% each year. The corporate bigwig, Vodafone, just completed a study into cell phone use in Africa. They discovered that Africans overall considered cell phones a contributing factor in business profits increases. For many Africans cell phones give the only option for communications where landline phones are unreliable or don’t even exist. In all parts of the developing world the 100% saturation of cell phone business is on a mega blitz. Other countries like China and India, both of which have large populations, are seeing the number of new cell phone subscribers increasing in amounts that are larger than some european countries populations.

There has grown a world wide love affair with the cell phone. Many people view them as an extension of their own personalities and identities. Cell phone customization has meant that cell phone handsets are as varied as the people who own them. This has been good news for the phone accessories industry. Ring tone companies in particular have seen major profits in line with the proliferation of the cell phone.

The cell phone is the most throw away of all electronics. Customers will get new phones usually once every 18 months. Even though phones are carried around and get scratched or broken easily that is not the main reason for the large cell phone turnover rate. The most obvious and usual reason is people get sick of their phones and want newer models. This interest in upgrades is also being stimulated by the cell phone companies who are making newer, better and faster models each year much more easily. Customers are jumping on this reason and turning over ther=ir phones for newer models more often than ever before.
